Supported by The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Since in 2006 NGO Fractal is successfully conducting program – European Integration and Western Balkan in partnership with Spark and in cooperation with local organization from Mitrovica – Center for Civil Society Development (CCSD).
This program is one of three modules within Mitrovica Youth Program (MYP)coordinated by Spark. Program involves in multilateral cooperation Spark (Amsterdam), CCSD (Mitrovica), DDA (Nis), Jelena Anzujska (Mitrovica) and Fractal (Belgrade).
It is important to highlight the fact that this was very first program which deals with European integration issues and involves Mitrovica University students. Throughout this program we want to show importance of learning about the EU topics with students of Mitrovica University and to raise their awareness on strategic importance of this topic.

Each year group of 25 students is gathering to attend program which is composed of 3 main components:

1.Interactive lectures with topics (16 lectures in total):

  • Introduction in EU Institutions, Laws and Procedures of EU
  • Economy of EU
  • EU Policies toward Western Balkan
  • Relations between EU Western Balkan countries

2. Academic skills (essays, analyses, case studies, presentation skills, critical thinking; 4 lectures in total)

3.Study visit (regional and international exchange):

This activity gathers 10 best participants – 6 from module European Integration and Western Balkan and 4 from Mitrovica Summer Courses – in one-week study session that will bring them to the representatives of key institutions and organizations from the EU. Selection criteria are: presence on the lectures, showed readiness for active participation and interaction during lectures, tests and essay results, interview etc. Like in previous two years in 2008 study visit will be organized in November and in that period participants will visit institutions and organizations based in The Netherlands (Amsterdam, Den Hague, Utrecht) and Belgium (Brussels).

Goals of the international exchange are:

  • Encouraging and linking cooperation with academic community in EU (students and professors)
  • To develop and improve knowledge on EU and European integration process
  • To meet representatives of international institutions that are present in western Balkan, especially in Kosovo

Overall goals of module European Integration and Western Balkan:

  • rising of awareness of students of Mitrovica University on issues related to EU integration process and regional cooperation and information sharing on this matter.
  • developing academic and organizational skills of Mitrovica University students.
  • initiating connections among students of Mitrovica University and students from EU Universities

Since with this program we want to stress out importance of youth activism, each year participants that have finished module are becoming part of alumni network that initiates small projects aimed to student population in Mitrovica: www.eiwb.net
