The BPPProgram is a program related to the cross-border, regional and local sustainable development issue in the mountainous protected area located on the borders with Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro (AKM). Direct and indirect conflicts that escalated during 90s in Western Balkan region made this zone poorer and led to the escalation of non-legal activities, such as smuggling and trafficking. The Program will foster a better understanding between the countries of this region and will reduce the security tension by involving stakeholders of all ethnic backgrounds in the management of the protected area themselves.
The aim of this project is to establish a Peace Park in the mountain area on the borders with Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro (AKM), known as Prokletije/Bieshket e Nemuna, and the
medium-term objective is to establish a single cross-border protected area, jointly managed through one integrated intergovernmental Agency.

Short-term objectives are to:

  • Define the BPP area and priorities for its protection and
sustainable development;
  • Strengthen cross-border cooperation on governmental, local and civil level
  • Stipulate and strengthen human and institutional capacities for cross-border protection and implementation
    of principles for local sustainable development
  • BPP promotion in order to bring international attention, donor institutions and investments.

Activities:

  • Building the partnership coalition with civil-society organization from the AKM region in order to secure contiuance and coordination for
project implementation, as well as the sustainablity of the project idea after its realization.
  • NGO capacities building and strenghtening through the
organisation of training courses with specific subjects such as new principles and approaches of protection and management of protected areas, strategic planning and sustainable development.
  • Networking of citizens organization and preparation of round tables with local authorities' representatives with specific subjects such as the promotion of common ideas and plans for sustainable development in line with the nature protection and sustainable use of natural values and resources.
  • Organisation of a Conference for all participants and interested parties in order to present previous activities and programs, as well as proposals for further joint plans on BPP protection and development.
Fractal and BPPP (UK) teams are jointly making efforts in fund-raising activities which are of key-importance for a timely, synchronized and coordinated Program implementation.
