TV Dialogue

In cooperation with
Forumi 2015 (Pristina)

Supported by the
US Embassy in Belgrade and the US Office in Pristina

After the Kosovo conflict there has been almost no dialogue between Serbs and Albanians. On both sides the idea of establishing transparent, visible and direct communication and dialogue with the other side is not gaining wider support. Although there is a dialogue, communication and even concrete cooperation between some groups (certain students and nongovernmental organizations) it is still not perceived by society as a crucial process and has very limited influence on the wider audience.

The media project TV Dialogue has been launched in cooperation of NGO Fractal and Forumi 2015, with the aim of providing the youth in Serbia and Kosovo with opportunity for interaction and exchange, and a resource for meaningful communication with a wider public. The TV Dialogue project is dedicated to the promotion of a common interest for peace and constructive social change in the region through raising youth, the media and academic involvement in information creating and sharing.

Within the TV Dialogue project, between 3rd and 8th of June 2007, students of the universities of Belgrade and Pristina gathered for four dialogue sessions. Therein they shared different views and ideas on the four following topics: ethnic stereotypes, the role of media in interethnic relations, the future status of Kosovo and Our future – European Integration. In addition to the students’ dialogues, each of the 4 TV Dialogue talk shows featured interviews with professionals, public opinion makers and civil society activists from Kosovo and Serbia. They all provided additional information on each of four discussion topics.

As the first two TV Dialogue sessions were organized and recorded in Pristina and the other two in Belgrade, these exchange visits also offered the students an opportunity to visit and meet the high representatives of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, the Kosovo Assembly, the Government and the Parliament of the Republic of Serbia.

At the end, 4 TV Dialogues and a documentary about the students’ exchange visits were produced for the purpose of broadcasting. Unfortunately, media outlets in Kosovo and Serbia expressed neither willingness nor interest in broadcasting the dialogues and the documentary.

Please check our video section to watch full-length TV Dialogue talk shows online, to learn more about students’ views and opinions, and to reflect on some of the following questions:

  • What is the role of media in Serbia and Kosovo in creating representations of other ethnic group?
  • How can we increase the positive potential of the mass media and support the stability in Western Balkans?
  • How do certain social conditions reinforce negative ethnic stereotypes?
  • What is the social and political function of ethnic stereotypes?
  • Can we develop mechanisms in order to decrease the impact of ethnic stereotypes?
  • What is the meaning of terms like independence, interdependence and dependence regarding Kosovo-Serbia relations?
  • How do Serbs and Albanians see the future, particular and common?
  • What are the common problems and values of young people in the region?
  • What are the experiences of the other nations that had been in conflict and have overcome it such as French and Germans or British and French?
