SYNERGY FOR ENERGY AWARENESS CHANGE

In cooperation with American University in Kosovo (Pristina)
Supported by the US Embassy in Belgrade and US Embassy in Pristina

SEA Change or Synergy for Energy Awareness Change is a strategic level effort, committed to give modest but nevertheless important contribution in a long-term process of envisioning, innovating and navigating energy efficiency change in the Western Balkan.

Energy efficiency is directly connected to all aspects of human existence. Envisioning and navigating energy efficiency change is a complex and long-term process, one that requires transformative change on political, social and economic, but at the same time on personal, individual level. This is why an active involvement of civil society as well as other stakeholders and actors is a necessary precondition. At the same time, the issue of energy efficiency is the most visible and tangible example of regional interconnectedness and interdependency and issue of common regional concern, urging us to think of new, creative and innovative ways for addressing energy issues on regional level. It is the strategic imperative of today to gather strengths and visions in order to generate energy efficiency of tomorrow.

SEA Change project aims to set a platform for process oriented, ongoing and inclusive exchange of views and perspectives about opportunities but as well challenges when thinking of energy efficiency in Western Balkan. It will actively seek broad-based participation among students and academics in the region as a process foundation and a first step of much wider and deeper campaign. In next steps SEA Change is committed to widen the scope of academic involvement and at the same time to involve grass-root movements, opinion formers, decision makers across the region, but as well to reinforce links with students and experts from other parts of the world.

As a process oriented effort, SEA Change project envisions a series of activities, meetings and web discussions, that will offer to students, professionals and experts an opportunity to come together and discuss challenges and opportunities, theories and practices, political, social and economic considerations in the field of energy efficiency.

First rotating SEA Change Conference in Pristina: South-East Europe’s Future Energy Leadership Conference

As a first step in the SEA Change process, the conference South-East Europe’s Future Energy Leadership Conference took place in Pristina, Kosovo, 4-6 December 2009, hosted and organized by the American University in Kosovo in partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology (New York) and NGO Fractal (Belgrade). The conference goal was to enable and enhance students’ dialogue on regional level to elicit views on key energy issues. Students from different countries of the region such as Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and United States together with AUK students offered their presentation on different energy related issues and also engaged in open discussion on these related fields. During the three days of the conference, students were involved in a wide range of activities including presentations, demonstrations, panel discussions, site visits around Kosovo, entertainment etc. The main discussion areas have been condensed down to a number of themes for follow on activities on local and regional level.

Regional SEA Change meeting in Belgrade

SEA Change meeting, organized by NGO Fractal, took place in Belgrade on 24 and 25 April 2010. It gathered civil society, university and media representatives from Western Balkan countries with an idea to discuss different aspects of energy, i.e. production, usage, awareness and the role it plays in shaping the region. This gathering gave the opportunity to participants to share views about challenges and dilemmas they are facing when dealing with the issue of energy awareness, to present their actions and methodologies, as well as to discussed a common ground for future joint ventures. Participants agreed about a common need and interest in creating the joint platform, and discussed common principles that such platform should be based on and goals of the platform.
